How to Contact Radio Stations for Public Service Announcements (PSAs)

 1. Identify Radio Stations

Start with radio stations you already listen to. Familiarity with a station often makes outreach easier and more comfortable.

You are also welcome to contact stations you do not regularly listen to. If you do, simply adjust the script or letter to remove references to being a listener or fan of the station and note that you are reaching out on behalf of Overeaters Anonymous.

2. Find the Right Contact

Visit the radio station’s website and look for one of the following:
    • A Public Service Announcement (PSA) or Community Announcements page
    • A Public Relations, Community Relations, or Community Outreach contact
    • The Station Manager
    • A program producer or host, especially for health, wellness, or community-focused programs
    • The News Department, which may handle community announcements

Some stations clearly list PSA submission instructions. Others do not, and a phone call or email inquiry is appropriate.

3. Make the Contact

Use the provided call script or letter to contact the station.
    • Introduce yourself briefly
    • Ask whether the station would consider running a public service announcement for Overeaters Anonymous
    • Let them know that additional information and links are available on the website, including announcement materials

If the station has questions you are unable to answer, you may copy the PIPO/UWD Chair on follow-up emails, so they can assist with organizational or public information questions.

4. Ask About Website Announcements (Backup Option)

If the station is unable or unwilling to run the PSA on air, ask a follow-up question:

“If an on-air announcement isn’t possible, would you consider posting a community announcement about Overeaters Anonymous on your station’s website?”

If they are open to this:
    • Ask who the correct contact person is for website postings
    • Ask about format, length, and submission requirements

Once you have this information, notify the Virtual Region, and content will be prepared to the station’s specifications.

Some stations already have a community announcements page. If you find one, please notify the region.

5. Follow Up and Get Help if Needed

  • If a station asks for materials in a different format or has technical requirements, contact: digital@oavirtualregion.or
  • If there are organizational or public information questions, you may copy the PIPO/UWD Chair on correspondence.
    • If a station declines both on-air and website options, thank them for their time and move on to the next station

6. Keep It Simple

    • Use the scripts provided
    • Make the call or send the email
    • Ask the question
    • Follow up if needed

Every inquiry helps expand awareness, even if it does not result in a PSA.
